What BMI actually measures

BMI is your weight divided by your height squared. That's it — it has no idea what your weight is made of. It was designed in the 1830s as a population-level statistical tool, not a way to assess any one individual's body composition.

For most people who don't lift, it's a rough, usable screening number. For anyone with meaningful muscle mass, it starts breaking down fast.

Where it falls apart

A 100kg powerlifter at 12% body fat and a 100kg out-of-shape person at 35% body fat get the exact same BMI. Same formula, same number, completely different bodies. BMI can't see the difference because it was never built to.

What is BMI?

Is BMI accurate for muscular people?

What is a normal BMI range?
The standard WHO reference ranges are: under 18.5 is classified underweight, 18.5-24.9 normal, 25-29.9 overweight, and 30+ obese. These are population screening categories, not individual health verdicts.
What should I use instead of BMI if I lift weights?
