What FFMI actually is
FFMI is like BMI's more honest cousin. BMI just divides your weight by your height — it can't tell a bodybuilder from someone carrying extra fat, because it doesn't know what the weight is. FFMI strips out body fat first, so what's left is a number that actually tracks muscle mass relative to your height.
It comes from a 1995 study (Kouri et al.) that measured drug-free and steroid-using bodybuilders and found a rough ceiling in the natural group's FFMI scores — which is where the "25 is about the natural limit" figure you'll see everywhere originally came from.
What the number means
Why it needs your body fat %
FFMI can't work off weight alone — it needs to know how much of that weight is actually muscle versus fat. If you don't know your body fat percentage precisely, a rough estimate is fine for this calculator; the number moves slowly with small errors in body fat.
If you want a more accurate starting point than guessing in a mirror, an AI photo grade will give you a body fat range along with a full muscle-by-muscle breakdown — worth running once so future FFMI checks are working off a real number instead of a guess.
